A custom closet reflects an individual’s style and tastes. The photo pictured to the left is no exception. It has an understated luxury, with rich tones, and it features many hidden options and accessories.
This custom closet was fabricated by Crooked Oak, located in Broadview, IL. The company is co-owned by Joel Schellhase and Joe Daschbach.
Schellhase says the company is not only a closet company but a cabinet company as well. “I try to mix the two,” he says.
This project is a floor-mounted system. “It’s cabinetry,” Schellhase notes. “It’s not built like a typical closet — it’s built as boxes, which are not rail hung, but floor mounted. It goes to the floor, and it’s installed like regular cabinetry.”
Fabricated with chocolate melamine and thermofoil, this closet also features many accessories, including crown moulding, shoe shelves with custom nosing, multiple hanging areas, custom hand-built drawer boxes with hand-built compartments, sliding jewelry trays and raised panel door and drawer faces.
According to Schellhase, there are a lot of other features, such as safes, hidden throughout the closet so the clients can “put away their valuables.”
This custom closet was originally commissioned by the builder, but Schellhase says that they ended up working with the homeowners and adapted it to their unique requirements, including finding hidden spaces for their luxuries.
“The design was catered around what the homeowners were looking for and what their needs were,” adds Schellhase.
